So the other day, I was making a poster for Tihar, and so began my search for the image of Goddess Laxmi. Of course, I googled it, and you know what I PicSearched, Binged, Yahooed and whatever -ed it. Obviously, now my computer is crammed with all these pictures, I thought I would use (which I did not). The reason - well most of them were age old South-Indian depiction of the goddess. I am not against any of them, they are all beautiful. And then I hit another idea, to do whatever searches I did to find pictures of Yellow - Tara (buddhist version of Laxmi). Yet I did not find what I was looking for.
And thus began, the sketching.
I wanted something that was a bit modern, with classical metaphors to it. I wanted something Nepali (well since I am creating it, why not? ). So I started another search expedition, but this time for models (you don't want to know how much s*** there are).
Anyways with the handful of free stock images I could get my hands on, I have sketched this.
My mind map for this image looks terribly confusing. Eventually, I did get into the idea of Griha-Laxmi ( Laxmi of your house). She's all powerful goddess who looks after you and your family, and holds the keys to the safe :). I was playing with the idea of putting her on Gunyu Cholo, then I thought of the day all men welcome their wives as a Laxmi of their home - so the bridal outfit. Also, I did not attach her extra arms to her physical body, just to make it more realistic. But we all do know how many arms a woman has.
So here it is, Dhawa Lama's version of Laxmi.
HAPPY TIHAR TO YOU ALL.
And remember men, you do not need go googling for Laxmi elsewhere, if you'd only look by your side, there she will be.
